The difference between a league and a championship

How organisers use the names, and which entry and format details to check.

3 minute read · Zinga Cricket

A league and a championship do not have universal, mutually exclusive meanings in cricket. Organisers use these names differently. Check the rules for entry and selection rather than deciding from the title alone.

Read the published entry requirements and competition format.

Championship

Read the published selection and qualification criteria.

Check the requirements for the specific competition.

01

Names do not define the format

A league may describe a regular season or a round robin. Championship may describe a title competition. Neither name alone tells you whether entry is open or selected.

02

Read the entry conditions

Check whether the organiser accepts registrations, requires qualification or issues invitations. Confirm team and squad eligibility before paying.

03

Check how the winner is decided

Look for the schedule, points table, tie breakers and knockout rules. Entry conditions and the method of deciding the winner are different questions.

04

Find the applicable rules

Use the event announcement and rulebook for that competition. Zinga’s formats, progression and selection requirements are explained together on the Tournaments page.
