How cricket rankings work

What a performance index measures, why raw runs and wickets are not enough, and how match impact is weighted.

3 minute read · Zinga Cricket

Cricket rankings compare performances using a defined system. A table of runs, a bowling average and a performance index answer different questions, so the meaning of a rank depends on the data and rules behind it.

Zinga’s Player Performance Index uses recent form, batting contribution, bowling contribution, overall match impact and player role. It is built from matches scored live by the assigned umpire. The source does not specify numerical weights, a decay schedule or a win probability model, so those should not be assumed.

01

Totals, averages and an index

Totals show accumulated output; averages relate output to dismissals or wickets; an index combines a broader set of factors. Look at the underlying match record and playing role when comparing players. One statistic does not fully describe a performance.

02

What Zinga considers

The PPI describes recent performance in the context of a player’s contribution and role.

  • Recent form
  • Batting contribution
  • Bowling contribution
  • Overall impact on the result
  • The role the player was asked to fill
03

What impact means here

Impact refers to contribution to the game. A useful innings or bowling spell may matter beyond its raw total. These examples explain the idea, but they do not establish a formula or guarantee that a specific performance will score more points than another.

Recorded scoring

Assigned umpires score matches live. Review your match record and use the support process if an entry needs correction.

05

Separate area records

Zinga calculates a player’s index separately for each area they play in. Playing across several areas does not dilute the standing earned in any one of them. Rankings exist at area, zone and city levels.

Does playing in another area dilute my ranking?

No. Zinga calculates the index separately in each area.

Is there a published weighting formula here?

No. The source identifies the factors but does not provide numeric weights or a win probability algorithm.
